EQ 9x9s 85, 86 from Virtual Quilter

Some basic 9 Patch blocks and just two fabrics can make some stunning designs, in this case with a narrow sashing with contrast squares.

The most basic of the blocks has been slightly modified to create the diagonal border blocks, which can be used not just as borders.

9 Patch Night Vision 15, 16 from Virtual Quilter

On point setting … and the four stars around the centre are made up by the corner sections of four blocks which meet in the centre squares of those four stars.

The second design is a straight setting, but once again the stars surrounding the centre block are created when the corners of the four blocks meet.

Purple Haze 6, 7, 8 from Virtual Quilter

Interesting!

Love the second one … my favourite for today! Love the variety in the blocks.

The last one is also interesting, but could use more variety in the blocks … just three different blocks in this one.

Light and Dark Squares 3, 6 from Virtual Quilter

Though I have used just two fabrics, this would work well with dark and light fabric scraps if they are well sorted, and all the medium fabrics ae saved for another project. Using one multicoloured fabric is my way of making a quick scrappy quilt in Electric Quilt, instead of using 35 dark and 43 light fabrics and mixing them up in five or six colourations of each and every block, which in this case are 9 patch blocks.

If I was to make these into real quilts instead of virtual, I would possibly use just one plain background fabric ...

Piecing is too fussy for me, but the colours make it look good to me!

The second one is interesting.

Ah, wow!

Low Volume Scraps from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Yippee! -  I was able to squeeze in one more quilt finish in 2021.

One type of scraps I have been heavily focused on recently are my low volumes.  I tend to use the really low volumes up pretty quickly.  But those that have a lot more volume tend to pile up.

I decided to chop them up into 3.5" squares and make a quilt from them.  I added in some black scraps for maximum contrast.

I really am pleased with how it turned out!

Back in November I shared some early progress and was disappointed with some of the ...

Oh Scrap! : Not Much Progress from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Unfortunately, I don't have a lot to share this week.  I just haven't had much time to sew this week.

I did get a chance to finish sewing the last of the blocks needed for this top.  I even sewed the blocks up into rows.  I was really hoping to finish the quilt top but I guess that will have to wait for next week.

So I hope you guys have lots to share!

*********************************************

It is now your turn to share what you are making with scraps.  Here are the details for linking up:

  • This linky party is ...

10 Plus Mods OP 9, 10 from Virtual Quilter

In today’s designs I have used the same colours and blocks as yesterday … just tipped them over a bit. The most intersting thing is how the border blocks work om point in comparison to being set straight.

I like the second one!

By the way, did you notice the mistake?

I didn’t until I was ready to hit the publish button! Should have had more coffee!

Oh Scrap! : Not Always Perfect from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Last Sunday I shared some scrappy nine patches made from some low volume scraps.

I have quite a few prints in my scrap bins that have a white background that never seem to have a home.  So I decided to come up with a simple design to use some of them up.

One block is a simple nine patch made with all 3.5" squares in a low volume.

This week I sewed some blocks with black/white squares.

Together they look like this.

I tried to use up the scraps I have and when I picked my black and ...

9P Night Vision 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 from Virtual Quilter

I have a large collection of 9 patch blocks created by mixing up the corner four squares with different centre squares … and of course the squares in the middle of each side of the nine patch blocks.

The design above shows a quilt with nine patch blocks with the same corner squares in each block and the same centre squares, and the side squares left plain.

The two designs below have the same pattern in the centre of each side, and some of the designs created in this way are rather good, even if I do say so myself.

These ...

Blocks of Green 1, 2 from Virtual Quilter

From the same block collection as the post below, but 2 greens replacing the reds.

Love the second design. I think it would work in just about any colour combination.

Red and White Quilts 45, 46 from Virtual Quilter

The first design today features four examples of how sometimes putting four blocks together creates a whole new block. I didn’t know it would happen, and it only worked because the four blocks together are separated by background fabric.

I wonder if there are other blocks which would work together in the same way?

I love the second design too.

Red and White in Reverse 39, 40 from Virtual Quilter

First design, red and white.

Second design, red and white … or perhaps I should say, white and red!

I think the quilting would show up better on the light background because the shadows of the quilted lines would be more prominent than on the darker background.

Red and White 2 Block OP 31, 32 from Virtual Quilter

A couple more of my Red and white collection of 9patch quilt designs.

In this project file I have used 10 blocks, with an alternative colouring used for two of them, and used each and every block with all of the others. Each combination is used twice, in both possible combinations.

As there are 131 designs in the project file, somewhere I have missed one … one day I might find the patience to work out which combination I missed, though I deliberately missed using the same block in both of the alternative placings, which would have made 144 in total ...

Red and White Quilted 9, 10 from Virtual Quilter

Two different 9 patch blocks, with some quilting motifs based on different 9 patch blocks.

This is part of a rather large series of project files using 9P blocks and just 2 colours which I have ignored for a couple of years … or more!

My favourite of these two is the first one, by far!

There are quite a few files with the same 9P/red and white theme, so I think I will follow that theme for this week.

Basic pieced 9P blocks, mixed together and I like the results.

The second design reminds me of a game board, but I have no idea what the rules might be!

Block Playtime 1 from Virtual Quilter

I got up a bit early this morning, and started playing with some pieced blocks in my personal block library. Made a few modifications to one of the blocks, which led to several more modifications. Amazing what I can do while waiting for the first coffee to kick in!

I even managed to add a second colouring of the block!

I am about to go and make a second coffee to go with breakfast … I wonder what I can do then!

10 Plus Mods 9, 10 from Virtual Quilter

Interesting.

This project file uses ten 9 Patch blocks, with modifications to colour placement, with a few lines either deleted or ignored when placing the colours.

I prefer the second design today.
